SOLDIER OF PEACE

Yitzak Rabin, the Israeli prime minister assassinated in 1995, was the first native-born Israeli to rise to that post and the first to make peace with the Palestine Liberation Organization. This tale illuminates his life in exquisite detail, beginning with the lives of his parents and continuing with Rabin's activities as a freedom fighter in the Haganah. The account follows him as commander in the War of Independence, Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces carrying out the smashing victory of the 1967 Six Day War, ambassador to the U.S., and two separate terms as prime minister. Rendered in an even, low-key British accent, Geoffrey Howard's narration presents Rabin in a positive light. Howard's pleasant intonation wears well in this lengthy biography.
