Sweden enters the horror genre. This debut novel is a terrific story, ably performed by Steven Pacey. The novel focuses on 12-year-old Oskar and his friendship with his unusual neighbor, Eli, who turns out to be a vampire. Further, some of Eli’s victims, who do not even realize they’ve been transformed into vampires, go on their own rampages, which turn out to be quite gory. Pacey’s gravelly voice and protracted enunciation help extend the drama and keep the listener captivated. He’s especially adept at framing the relationship between Oskar and Eli, making the book enjoyable from start to finish. D.J.S. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2011]
