The third in Zahn’s sci-fi series features former spy Frank Compton, now a planet-hopping P.I. When Compton arrives home from his latest adventure, he encounters a strange woman who begs him to rescue her sister from a group of evildoers he knows all too well. Narrator Dion Graham’s whiskey-and-smoke voice conveys the noir elements of this sci-fi story as Compton turns the woman down and then hears she’s been murdered. Soon he finds himself working to protect a special child from the “group mind” that wants to use her for nefarious purposes. Graham portrays diverse characters with changes in pitch and effectively uses tonal inflections to convey the author’s sympathies for those who find themselves on the outside of society’s norms.
