THE SOUTHERN BELLS

by | Read by Told by Donald Davis

Storytelling • 44 min. • Audio Program • ©

Davis entertains with two stories. "Uncle Frank and the Southern Bells," about the arrival of telephone service to rural North Carolina and the problems of having an eight-party line with the gabby Leatherwood sisters, will be particularly fun for older adults with their own memories of problem telephone service. "Winning and Losing" offers Davis's recollection of his first day of school. This story also has nostalgic appeal for older listeners. The bathroom humor will evoke giggles from children. Davis's rich Southern accent and folksy style draw listeners into his storytelling circle. Two yarns from this master storyteller aren't enough. Let's hope August House will continue to include more Donald Davis in its American Storytelling series. C.R.A. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPT 95]
