THE COMPANY WE KEEP is the story of former CIA agents Bob and Dayna Baer, who fell in love. It's a love story, more about emotion than espionage. It's also an odd book, written with such restraint that it seems like there are big pieces missing. Clearly, the couple was careful not to reveal anything sensitive, but the resulting book sounds like they spent all their time watching suspects and then being pulled off without explanation. They narrate themselves, with some help from Richard McGonagle, who is a pro. Dayna reads her parts pretty well, sounding like she's telling a story. Bob doesn't share her skill. He reads as if he's unfamiliar with the words. Also, he inserts, pauses where they, don't belong. M.S. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2011]
