Barbara Whitesides's performance blows hot and cold. One moment she's spot-on in her characterizations, the next she's less than exciting. The story also has a bit much going on, but if you have the patience, it ultimately pays off. Anna and Sylvie, roommates and look-alikes, are caught in a mix-up. Sylvie is killed in a fire, but everyone thinks the body is Anna’s. (She’s hiding out.) Sammy Greene (Sammy is a female), a discredited reporter, is hot on the trail of the truth. Add a world fearful of what's going to happen in a few days when Y2K (remember that?) comes around, and you have a story that keeps you guessing. Whitesides's female characters are notable and make the overall listening experience pleasurable. A.L.H. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2011]
