Christopher Hurt gives an outstanding narration of this insider’s analysis of Steve Jobs’s one-of-a-kind leadership at Apple. Hurt’s casual gravitas is perfect for an analytic business biography; he’s superb at using his vocal tone and phrasing to emphasize crucial points. The author worked closely with Jobs and, with his own tech experiences elsewhere, has a deep context for understanding how the iconoclastic leader operates. The narrative stretches over time from Elliot’s first chance meeting with the 25-year-old Jobs to present-day Apple, with lots of tech history along the way. It’s loaded with fascinating anecdotes about Jobs’s uncanny product instincts, tyrannical perfectionism, and willingness to nurture the creative process. Though the analysis is more affectionate than piercing, the story is a useful look at what it takes to keep a large company nimble. T.W.
