STONESTRUCK

by | Read by Sian Phillips

Children Ages 8+ • 5.75 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1995

Jessica can't seem to face the terrors of WWII and the harsh status of "evacuee" in a Welsh village. Her fears mount as she finds she must also challenge the evil of the Green Lady and the stonestruck children to protect her very soul. Phillips's voice seems to effortlessly fit into the role of Jessica and the other children, with its soft tones and lightly emphasized speech. The few adult voices are as smoothly performed, with the housekeeper's fussy, protective character playing a direct contrast to the evil, sickeningly sweet voice of the Green Lady. Phillips enlivens the story with charming cockney accents for the street children from London. This tale of overcoming personal fear has a timeless theme.
