STORIES OF NEW ENGLAND: THEN & NOW, VOL. 2

by | Read by Terry Bregy, Blair Einstein, et al.

Fiction • 4.5 hrs. • Anthology • ©

The unique flavor of New England literature is well-represented in this selection, which includes the well-known “Secret Life of Walter Mitty” as well as stories by Lovecraft and Hawthorne. Stories by lesser known writers round out the choices. Each of the four readers does a fine job of presenting men, women, children and antiquated accents. Jean Stafford’s “Hope Chest” is beautifully rendered with the pathos and frustration of an embittered old woman’s encounter with a sweet, strong-willed child. The horror of a man and two boys lost at sea in “The Ledge” is haunting and painful to listen to. This is an excellent collection, especially for those seeking diverse bits of Americana.
