This audiobook—based on a 1974 novel slated for the big screen, with Brad Pitt—takes a different approach to a hustle. A simple heist forms the semblance of a plot. But it’s the dialogue between the characters—fiery, funny, streetwise, and fast—that carries the book. Narrator Jeff Woodman’s challenge is not in the diversity of characters but in their accents. Virtually all are native Bostonians. Woodman never misses a beat and makes this a resounding production. He conjures voices, speeding up those for nervous guys while “hulking up” not-so-bright fellows. All are distinguished expertly. This dialogue-heavy book may not be for everyone.
