ANNOYING The Science of What Bugs Us

by | Read by Joe Palca, Flora Lichtman

Contemporary Culture • 6.25 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2011

This survey of research on what bothers us and why is mostly enjoyable and sometimes enlightening—but occasionally unconvincing. Authors Palca and Lichtman, both of NPR’s “Science Friday,” divide the reading, though without rhyme or reason—a criterion, according to this book, of what is annoying. Although Palca’s voice is likable, his reading is at times a bit faltering and unsure. Lichtman sounds more energetic and confident; however, sometimes she reads too quickly. Her voice is strong, clear, and expressive but has a nasal quality, some pronunciation quirks (very hard “r’s”), and a slightly strident edge. This is light but interesting science for those who can overlook the minor deficiencies. W.M. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2011]
