Inspector James McLevy tries to maintain law and order in Victorian Edinburgh. These two dramatizations present cases of counterfeiting and vigilantism, with Brian Cox playing the slightly dour, right-minded police inspector with aplomb. Siobhan Redmond, with her silky Scottish voice, brings bawdy housekeeper Jean Brash to life. While McLevy and Brash are on opposing sides of the law, their paths often come together in a humorous way. The top-notch performances transport listeners to the dark streets of Victorian Edinburgh. The two performances in this production, while comparatively short, are highly entertaining. K.J.P. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2011]
