Captain Jack Aubrey and his surgeon/naturalist/philosopher friend, Stephen Maturin, set sail once more. Aboard ship is a microcosm of English society in the Napoleonic era. Brown struggles with feminine characters and tangles up in various foreign accents and vocal registers. The finely defined characters of O'Brian's earlier books are missing.
