When Grandpa brings home a puppy he rescued from a fire, Ernest the pig, Gabby the mynah bird, and Milly the cat struggle to adjust to the new arrival. Narrator David de Vries’s genial reading is appropriate to the story’s gentle tone as Ernest tries to keep peace on the farm. De Vries adds to the characterization of each animal through the distinct voices he creates, although his voice for Gabby doesn’t sound like a mynah bird and is somewhat jarring. Animal lovers will forgive this small flaw in a story that shines an amusing light on farm life and explores the joys and difficulties of welcoming a new family member.
