Bunn’s novel, which takes place amid the war in Iraq, keeps the listener riveted as it offers hope for a solution to ancient enmities that transcends both national and religious differences. Paul Boehmer narrates with a subtlety that must be experienced. His soft delivery at first seems at odds with a novel of war, but one soon realizes it’s appropriate as the main character is a Christian in a Muslim nation—that is, a person who must tread lightly. Boehmer also puts a great deal of quiet energy into other characters in the story. Author and narrator work together to create a production that is a joy to hear—and that makes the listener stop and think about what’s going on in the world. T.D.
