In Doiron’s second mystery, Maine game warden Mike Bowditch is called to investigate a car/deer accident, but when he arrives, both the driver, a young woman, and the deer are gone. Henry Leyva’s Downeast accents are spot-on as the author sketches vivid pictures of lobstermen, state police, locals, and summer people. Leyva’s performance captures Mike’s insightful reflections as he deals with personal and spiritual quandaries. When the missing woman is found, brutally raped and murdered, he becomes obsessed with finding the killer. Leyva keeps the action taut as Mike’s live-in girlfriend and his friends express concern for his mental health. Leyva creates genuine people—some likable, some creepy—but all very real.
