"The Pit and The Pendulum," one of Poe's most widely read stories, is supported by five minor works. Samuel Griffin reads in a voice tinged with subdued horror. The Irish accent he uses makes this version of "Why The Little Frenchman Wears His Arm in a Sling" the most accessible way to read this difficult story. In "Ms Found in A Bottle," Poe's prize-winning conceptualization of death, Griffin's ominous narrative never strays into the melodramatic. The brief introduction to Poe's life is informative. The only false note is the distracting music which often plays over the final words of the stories. S.F. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG 93]
