Long sentences and language steeped in clinical psychology don’t prevent this book from delivering many astute insights on covert aggression and manipulation. Kevin Foley’s rich tone and phrasing acumen combine to create an almost flawless reading. Though compound sentences are the norm, his phrasing missteps are rare. But the formal, old-fashioned sound of his performance lacks the freshness this kind of writing desperately needs. Despite this production oversight, the audio provides useful distinctions regarding manipulative personality disorders and a thoughtful analysis of why we don’t want to feel negative toward or have open conflicts with people who have them. In an increasingly permissive and self-serving age, this is crucial advice on how we can recognize highly skilled manipulation and level the playing field with effective strategies.
