Max, a Boy Scout who is an expert orienteerer, inexplicably finds himself in a strange wood, where he joins forces with a badger, a bear, and a cat—all of whom talk. Dick Hill fully captures their wonderful friendship and sometimes-humorous observations. As the friends are being pursued by hunters, they must solve the mystery of Hero Woods in order to escape. Hill’s crisply enunciated narrative passages contrast sharply with his gentle and engaging delivery of the dialogue. The combination makes for an uneven listening experience.
