Narrator Casaundra Freeman does her best with this disappointing first novel, but there’s little for her to work with. A conventional story of forbidden and adulterous love across the race line in the South in 1913 requires fresher writing and more subtle character development to keep the listener engaged. Even Freeman seems to lose some of her focus in the long, flat stretches between the contrived emotional climaxes; her phrasing is decidedly odd in places. Her control of accents and voices, however, is exemplary. The text itself could use some of her nuance and control. D.M.H. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2011]
