Every life has an intricate knot of secrets kept hidden from everyone, sometimes even, from ourselves. The hidden regrets that constrict the lives of David and Kyra Winters begin to unravel when their 5-year-old son disappears from their backyard. Joyce Bean’s narration meanders from past to present and person to person as the secrets are gradually untangled. It’s a complex story, and without consistent character voices, the listener really needs to stay focused to keep time, place, and character straight. Ultimately, there’s little about Kyra and David’s angst-ridden lives to care about, and Bean’s detached narration does nothing to provoke interest or empathy.
