In the parallel alternate reality of 1862, Gerard Doyle confronts many odd characters and portrays the increasing eccentricity of Swinburne. Doyle takes in stride the yelps and whimpers of Swinburne as he has plenty of opportunities to indulge his pleasure in the pain of whips and other accoutrements that come his way in the course of their investigation. Doyle's clear contrast between the reserved Burton and the flamboyant Swinburne provides the parameters for this tale of suspense, séances, and madness.
