GRANT ME TIMELY GRACE

In Washington in 1863, the city's wealthy, most celebrated host is secretly a Confederate spy who is plotting a power play. At the same time, the man's daughter must choose between an influential Briton and the soldier she loves. Andy Mack keeps things rolling with a tense, emotional narration. He does exaggerate his character portrayals—as in giving the spy a cold hiss of a voice and his daughter a permanent petulance. However, this tendency ultimately adds to the drama of the story.
