BORROWED LIGHT

In this gritty police procedural, Detective Inspector Joe Faraday wades through the murky underworld of Portsmouth, in the south of England, and the neighboring Isle of Wight. Narrator Tim Pepper delivers the strong language and descriptions of brutal violence with aplomb. Even though the story recounts the investigation of multiple murders, Pepper’s pace remains surprisingly unrushed. But his characterizations of the lead characters, a male and a female, are hindered by the thin character development within the story itself.
