A FATAL THAW

by | Read by Marguerite Gavin

Mystery & Suspense • 6 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1992

In this early Stabenow mystery, Marguerite Gavin perfectly captures the gruff-voiced Aleut detective Kate Shugak, whose throat was damaged in an attempted murder in an earlier book. Along with her part-wolf partner, Mutt, Shugak is plunged back into work by a serial killer and a body that comes to light during spring thaw. Kate’s home base, called simply the Park, is packed with colorful native Alaskans and even wilder characters from the Lower 48. These characters challenge Gavin to individualize voices, which she does extremely well. As the story comes to a climax, she ratchets up the tension of a death-defying mountain climb to track the killer. D.P.D. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2012]
