Meet Butch Karp, hard-boiled, hard-hitting Chief Assistant DA for New York County, whose specialty is homicide; and his equally "hard" wife, Marlene Ciampi, bodyguard for battered women and now attorney for a girl accused of killing her stillborn baby. Their brilliant daughter, Lucy, also becomes entangled in their cases. While Meloni's rough-edged voice brings life to the characters and ably juggles the multiple plots, the abridgment inhibits the story's development, leaving the listener surprised that the book ends before it really begins.
