It's easy to get befuddled by modern technology—imagine what it was like in 1868, when science and technology took on a new importance in a nation beginning to heal after a civil war. There’s a new threat in the air and in the waters of Boston: something that melts glass, causes scientific instruments to go haywire, and is capable of traveling beneath the Charles River. Narrator Stephen Hoye has a crisp, measured style that breathes life into the main characters, four young students, including members of the first graduating class of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Hoye’s performance makes listeners care about the students as they use their bravery, scientific skills, and modern detective methods to track down those responsible for causing chaos in Beantown.
