Lewis reads with a clear, strong tenor voice and an even pace. The work is replete with detail about U.S. Grant's life, from his humble origins to his presidency to his death. This audiobook also comments on other writings about Grant. The content is a mixture of academic and popular writing, and Lewis's reading communicates both of these aspects with great use of inflection and feeling. For example, Perret is frequently critical of Grant's autobiography, and Lewis makes that criticism clear to the listener. For those interested in the U.S. Civil War, in particular, and in nineteenth-century U.S. history in general, this will be a lively and pleasurable audiobook.
