James Madison, "the father of the Constitution," may have shared the shaping of the historical document with many others, but, according to the author, his political writings and his shaping of what became the Democratic Party make him "the father of politics." This biography was inspired by Brookhiser’s admiration for the early president's actions in the War of 1812. That admiration for Madison comes through in Norman Dietz's reading. It's never dramatic, but Brookhiser's keen interest in his subject is always present. Dietz’s engagement keeps listeners' interest, even when the details of political wrangling might otherwise be tedious.
