Occurring in the United States' infancy, the Lewis and Clark expedition was an ambitious voyage across 2,500 miles of forbidding, uncharted territory. Ambrose is particularly captivated by Lewis, Jefferson's young protégé, whose remarkable journal provides the lively, detailed account of the expedition, but whose life tragically fell apart after its conclusion. Whitener's reading expresses the sort of wonder and optimism that one quickly appreciates about Lewis.
