Jane Bradley has created a wonderful, original character in Shelby Waters, a feisty, hard-looking woman who has big hair, wears tight jeans and cowboy boots, and is a force to be reckoned with. Narrator Susan Bennett is terrific as Shelby, a searcher of lost persons, in this unsettling, clear-eyed look at the effects of random violence. Narrator T. Ryder Smith offers a disturbing glimpse into the mind of Jesse, a sadistic psychopath who takes pleasure in finding what a person loves most and destroying it. Jesse becomes a living reminder that one can’t count on anything in this world. Set in the lonely backwoods of Carolina farm country, YOU BELIEVERS is an emotional roller coaster with a pair of performances that will leave listeners breathless.
