Certainly the best of the recent biographies of the luminous, glorious Marlene Dietrich, Spoto's work successfully evokes the mystery and decadence of pre-Nazi Berlin. Spoto's recreation of that era and Dietrich's subsequent career have a built-in fascination for today's listeners. Reader Mary Peiffer warms to the subject as the narration progresses. The details of Dietrich's life engage both the reader and the listener more and more profoundly as the story unfolds.
