Christopher Lane’s precise diction and baritone voice give his narration a masculine sound. He delivers this true story of two boys who grow up in an Istanbul orphanage in a sonorous voice that is reminiscent of a theater performance. Upon leaving the orphanage at the age of 18, the friends become lovers—and suffer a tragic end. Listeners who enjoy a predictable delivery won’t find this narration unimaginative or monotonous, but those who like variety in diction, pace, and pitch may find it dull. The slight accent Lane uses to give voice to the Turkish background of the characters creates cultural authenticity. M.R. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2012]
