Maybe audiobook reviewers who accept only unabridged books condemn themselves to hearing relatively few first-rate readers. Perhaps excellence is rare everywhere. For this reviewer, it is rare enough to be like an unexpected breath of fresh air in a room one hadn't realized was stuffy. Michael Hanson makes every word count as he brings this epic science-fiction adventure to life before the mind's eye. Carol Cowan, though confined to voicing a few female characters, is fully his equal as the other half of what may be the only ensemble in the business that can make a multi-voiced performance listenable.
