WAITING FOR THE RAIN

South Africa, gripped by apartheid, has been the subject of many writers, but few are so finely attuned to its intricate dilemmas as Gordon. Though Lecat's native accent may take adjusting to, her soft tones seem to sing this elegy to a stricken land. As two boys (one black, one white) grow up, their paths cross and recross, as they become increasingly aware that their friendship, once dream-like with games, will suffer in the harshest light of injustice and ignorance. The slow, invading intensity of their realization is almost painful in the hearing. Together, author and reader reveal passion for the land, passion for understanding and passion for a redemption that resounds with pity for the people.
