UNRAVELING

Katie Schorr’s nubile voice and steely delivery are perfect for Janelle, who is a high school junior, lifeguard, and daughter of an FBI agent. Schorr portrays Janelle as calm, even placid, as she’s hit by a truck. She should be dead but mysterious Ben somehow mends her severed spine and restarts her heart. Schorr’s laid-back pacing contrasts well with the wild plot, an impossible tangle of ominous circumstances. She voices Janelle with steadfast levelheadedness even as the world is about to end. Chapters are titled with a time signature on the countdown to destruction; read aloud, it gets tedious.
