Sean Runnette's narration starts out with an unemotional, almost stilted, delivery. However, as the story goes on, you realize that the main character, Gene, is hiding his emotions. If he gives away that he's a nearly extinct human, he'll be eaten by the vampires he's hiding among. When Gene is chosen by lottery to hunt down the last remaining humans, his carefully constructed world is thrown into chaos. Runnette does an excellent job of slowly adding layers of emotion and confusion to the character, and his cool delivery of the narrative adds to the suspense. The story ends with a cliff-hanger that suggests another installment. S.M. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2012]
