Fiction • 7.25 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2012

Junot Díaz tells the story of Yunior, a Dominican man who moved to the Northeast U.S. as a child. Yunior’s life is told through a series of interconnected but non-chronological stories, which are narrated by Díaz himself. The stories are separated from one another not only by titles, but also by interludes of Spanish-language music, both of which not only help the listener discern one from another but also add ambiance and authenticity. Díaz's narration is somewhat uneven. When his words flow, he has the accent and attitude to make listeners lose themselves in the story, but at times his cadence is choppy, with odd pauses and emphasis on strange words that detract from the overall experience.
