Young Adult Young Adult • 6.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2012

In Italy, in 1453, two 17-year-olds are on intersecting paths. Luca Vero, a monk turned Inquisitor, uses both science and religion to seek signs of the end of days. Isolde has learned the skills to manage her own lands but has been tricked out of her inheritance and is now fleeing from accusations of witchcraft. Narrator Charlie Cox withholds the drama from his narration, flattening the emotional range of the dialogue and distancing listeners from the characters. Although the historical details are fascinating and the teens have several exciting adventures, Cox delivers the story in a steady rhythm, rarely picking up the pace, even for action scenes. Narrator Bianca Amato deftly reads the author's note, which explains the inspiration for the story. C.B.L. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: JULY 2012]
