John Lee’s narration of THE PIRATES! is a triumph. This is an odd and silly book that a reader could grow weary of. It’s full of anachronistic and adult humor about pirates who don’t seem to have names and are rather inept at pirating, or anything else for that matter, but who value silky beards and honey hams. Lee transforms it into a hilarious audiobook that has the listener hanging on to every piratical word. Lee creates so many fun and lively characters: The pirate captain camps it up, Captain Ahab roars, Cutlass Liz threatens seductively to run the pirates through, Charles Darwin educates and worries, and Captain FitzRoy (of H.M.S. BEAGLE) has a lovely Scots brogue. Lee even has to sing as the pirate captain and Black Bellamy stage a chantey-singing contest in Las Vegas (a city the pirate captain somehow has sailed to).
