This novel ties together the three previous books in the Giver series through the story of Claire, a teenager who defies her repressive community to have a relationship with her son. Narrator Bernadette Dunne is a steady presence during Claire’s journey as she learns her society’s loopholes and then takes flight. Young gives the people Claire encounters distinct voices, moving unobtrusively between men and women, young and old. As Claire enters new settlements, Young adds slight accents that help orient the listener and define the setting.
