Eliza Foss creates an interesting woman in Catherine Winslow, former investigative journalist turned household hints columnist. Catherine lives alone in Vermont on remote Cloudland Road. After five unsolved murders in the past two-and-a-half years, Catherine discovers a sixth body while on a walk close to home. Even with a meandering, often far-fetched story line, Eliza Foss’s careful performance gives a clear sense of Catherine’s melancholy as she contemplates her past mistakes and her advancing age. (She’s just turned 42.) Catherine ponders her difficult relationship with her daughter and, even with a serial killer on the loose, seriously considers renewing her affair with a man who once strangled her.
