Jeanne M. Dams's first mystery introduces the listener to amateur sleuth Dorothy Martin, an American widow who discovers a dead body in church on Christmas Eve. Kate Reading is marvelously refreshing as Dorothy. Unique and delightfully sarcastic, Reading establishes Martin as an insightful and capable detective. Scottish, British and German dialects are spoken perfectly, adding spice and authenticity to the quirky characters. Reading builds suspense as she traces Martin's harrowing escapes from the murderer. Her interpretation of Alan, the elderly police detective and Dorothy's investigative partner, establishes him as a tough "cop" quite taken with his intellectual equal.
