BOGART

by | Read by Michael Mitchell

Biography & Memoir • 15 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1997

Eric Lax wrote this biography of Humphrey Bogart based on extensive research by the late Ann Sperber. (Lax estimates these resources at a "quarter ton.") Though the book concentrates more on the actor's public life and career than on his personality, it is remarkably full and satisfying in its discussions of key Bogart films, especially THE PETRIFIED FOREST, THE MALTESE FALCOM, CASABLANCA and TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. Michael Mitchell's precise reading is consistently clear but sometimes stilted and unnatural due to his tendency to overenunciate. His fastidious vocal characterizations for the few quotations distract rather than enhance. Still, the merits of the book surpass the limits of the reading.
