In this dual story set, narrator Andi Arndt deftly plays up the timid, insecure nature of plain Jayne Gilbert, a librarian who is so determined to show up at her ten-year high school reunion with a guy that she accepts the assistance of her mysterious neighbor. In the second story, headstrong Ellen goes back to college and moves into a house with three college guys. Though this helps with her financial situation, she finds herself at odds with the handsome owner of the house. Arndt’s articulation, fluctuating tones, and varied pace are especially bewitching and comical as she portrays the fretting and confusion that prevail when the female protagonists are in the presence of their love interests.
