THE LINCOLN LETTER

The letter Abraham Lincoln wrote on the last day of his life in 1865 shapes two stories about searches for his diary. One follows a present-day Boston historian; the other concerns a Civil War-era telegraph operator who accidentally comes into—and out of—possession of the book. Narrator John Pruden keeps the Washington intrigue in both eras interesting, although the Civil War drama is more compelling as it provides a glimpse of life in the wartime capital. He also brings both excitement and heart to the eventual battle scenes. Pruden juggles the two stories without missing a beat.
