When an unknown gunman takes a classroom of elementary school children and their teacher hostage, the school goes into “Code Red lockdown.” Students outside the hostage classroom are told to “go to their safe place.” Multiple narrators capture five characters who are linked to the hostages: a guilt-ridden parent; a grandfather; the teacher; a 13-year-old student; and a policewoman named Meg Barrett, who feels responsible for the town’s children. The gunman remains an enigma. Short segments that move from character to character create the tense plot.
