Merlington portrays protagonist Mikala Aulani with a strong, clear, and sometimes breathy voice that captures the independent Georgia attorney’s passionate personality, especially her anger when she discovers that her client Sophie Lee has been wrongfully imprisoned for the last 10 years. Merlington smoothly transitions between the voice of the story’s narrator and the diverse range of character voices. Her dynamic voice and pacing also make for a gratifying listen as she successfully conveys the building suspense as Aulani hides Sophie Lee in Hawaii and seeks revenge on the attorney who put Sophie Lee behind bars.
