FULL BODY BURDEN Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats

by | Read by Kirsten Potter, Kristen Iversen

Contemporary Culture • 14 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2012

The title refers to the amount of radioactive material in the human body that becomes an ongoing source of radiation. It’s a chilling concept, but it’s a key concern if you live near a company that produces nuclear bombs. This memoir is a testament to the nuclear age, and to the Americans who knowingly and unknowingly became its victims. Narrator Kirsten Potter’s voice has the perfect combination of forcefulness and tenderness to make this a compelling work. She uses a gentle, measured tone when narrating the sections on everyday life and a more aggressive, portentous tone when narrating the parts that will raise the hair on your neck. Potter also knows when to pause for effect. It’s a great performance for a book that deserves a wide audience. R.I.G. © AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine [Published: AUGUST 2012]
