Geoffrey Howard adequately reads these four stories by Joseph Conrad, whom most regard as one of the greatest writers of English literature. Throughout the four dramatically different stories in this volume, Howard ably adapts his tone, pace and insight to convey the intricacies of Conrad's splendid fiction and deep characters. However, the listener must pay close attention and, at times, review the reading in order to maintain an effective grasp on this grand material. It is no fault of Howard, but merely the glaring fact that Conrad is a writer who must be read, or listened to, with penultimate dedication and conviction.
